Gardening and photography are both about patience, whether it is waiting for a flower to bloom or waiting for the light to be just right to photograph you wait.

Several years ago (I’m not sure when) I planted Canterbury Bells in my garden and since then I have watched the nice patch of green ground cover appear each spring and wondered if it was a weed, this year I got flowers.

Both can be a surprise as well, although I try to visualize what my photograph will look like when I’m shooting, sometimes it’s a surprise, somewhere between clicking the shutter button and the final edited version it changes. That goes for my garden this summer, along with the Canterbury Bells, I have had two welcome surprises, Ithuriel’s Spear has appeared before but not for many and I enjoyed photographing it. The Musk Mallow could be a weed but with the pale pink colour and texture in the petals I am glad I left it be, hopefully it will reseed and come back next year.

This month you will find photographs of the surprises, some garden regulars, some trips to local areas with the Harbour City Photography Club and some experiments with editing.
